Consistency is part of spiritual growth.

I have been posting some excepts from Al-Anon literature lately because I find them so insightful and some of my friends have asked me to share them.

One of the most beneficial things I have learned from my Al-Anon experience is to be consistent in my thoughts, words, and actions. In my alcoholic home, I learned to mask uncomfortable situations with words and actions I thought would promote harmony. I have since learned that agreeing with others simply to keep peace causes me to be resentful. As difficult as it may be, today I won't automatically concur with the thoughts and opinions of others. If I have a different point of view, I express it, then let go of the other's reaction. I practice "Live and Let Live" and "Let Go and Let God."

There are many Jewish sources that talk about the importance of consistency, this link list some.

Spiritual growth comes from consistency.

One of the atributes of Hashem is Netzach.  Hashem keeps the world running on a consistent basis. We do not have to worry if the sun is going to stop shining. We know that Hashem is consistent. One of the most important things that we have to do is to try to emulate Hashem. The Omer helps us to grow in this way because it helps us to work on the consistency of our avodah.

When we have to give an accounting of our deeds before Hashem we will be faced with the consistency of our deeds. We might explain that we did not give more Tzedakah because we did not have money, but Hashem will examine how we spent money and if it is found that we wasted money on trivial things, we will be faulted for not giving money to Tzedakah. If we are faulted for not learning, we may say that we did not have time. Then we will be held accountable for the time we wasted.

from a Shiur by Rabbi Zev Leff "The Omer and Consistency" on Aish

Our success on OA also depends on consistency. We have to weigh and measure our food every meal. We have to use the tools every day. This is the path to health.

The Omer and Consistency

If we want Hahem to be consistent with us, to give us everything that we need, we have to be consistent with Hashem. Consistency comes from doing something over and over. Reviewing something one hundred and one is much better then one hundred times. We always have to do that extra repetition, because it keeps us consistent. Consistency is the basis of the Torah. Hashem could only give the Torah through Moshe, because Moshe was completely consistent. In order for us to receive the Torah we have to work on being consistent. That is why we have to work on consistency in the time leading up to the giving of the Torah.

If we do not value consistency, we will not value Hashem because Hashem's essence is consistency. This is the midah of Netzach that we have to strive for.

from a Shiur by Rabbi Zeff Leff, "The Omer and Consistency" from Aish Audio

Now that I am on OA I have learned a new level of consistency that I never was able to attain before. Having a sponsor to call every day, and commit to, caused me to learn to be consistent. Now I am trying to use this consistency to grow in Mitzvot too.

"The Joy in Consistency"-Bilvavi Miskan Evneh

From "Getting to Know Your Self" by the author of "Bilvavi Miskan Evneh"
page 244

If you seek pleasure in something new and different, you are stuck in the mentality of a created being, which by nature is always moving and imbalanced. You cannot find true pleasure on that level. The Creator, though, is unchanging; He is timeless. To find His Presence and the deepest pleasure, you must rise above your level and find balance, which transcends all change.

You may be wondering, "Am I supposed to eat the same foods every day? Should I go to work exactly the same way each day? Must I learn the same songs and read the same books? That would be so annoying!".

But why is that annoying? Because you are used to extremes, and you don't recognize the joy in consistency which confers the absolute and true pleasure! The pursuit of extreme movements come from other nations, who do not have a deep connection with Hashem. But we can truly cleave to Him, by connecting to the state without extremes that does not need to change.

We see that learning balance is necessary in order to be able to find the deepest part of yourself. One who does not guide himself in this way is liable to enter the mode of extremism, never to depart from it.
This insight was the final push that I needed to join OA. The realization that the structure of OA is for my spiritual good opened the door for me.
